POR-POL NET is a Polish-Portuguese project dedicated to new forms of networking and the influence of Internet phenomena on visual arts, literature, and music. It stems from the cooperation established between Academia Artium Humaniorum at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (PL) and the Centre for Comparative Studies at the University of Lisbon (PT) – the two institutions actively engaged in the promotion of interdisciplinary research.

While related to a whole range of older initiatives of this kind (not excluding the 2015 p2p exhibition curated by Piotr Marecki and Alvaro Seiça or the 2019 https://sztuka.net 2.0 conference organized at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań), POR-POL NET aims at confronting its audiences with the most recent examples of works and ideas, provoking a reflection on generational and technological shifts, the emergence of the so-called vernacular digital cultures, and the forging of new concepts in the fields of literary theory, artivism, and curatorship.

The project launches with an international exhibition, that will run between 07.06.2023—30.06.2023. On this occasion, works of nearly 30 artists from the two opposite sides of the continent will be presented in a constellation of several physical spaces spread around Poland and Portugal, as well as in a digital room in Piotr Kopik’s Kliki i Obroty Gallery. Lacking a clearly defined centre and relying on active collaboration between the institutions, curators, and makers, this part of the initiative is in itself a practical exercise in establishing a living, susceptible network. Moreover, with many works and accompanying events picking up on the notions of hybridity, recombination, multilinearity and parasitism as valid creative strategies, it showcases different forms of engagement with technologies and ways in which they simultaneously enhance and transform our connections.

The exhibition will have a critical follow-up during a one-day international colloquium, held at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon, and planned for 23.06.2023. By combining a roundtable with artists and curators and presentations from the specialists in the field, it is expected to serve as a platform for discussing the first outcomes of the project as well as placing them in a broader context of an academic reflection on the nature of recent trends in contemporary net practices. Counting on the presence of such thinkers as Domenico Quaranta and Ryszard W. Kluszczyński, as well as Ana Matilde Sousa, Bruno Ministro, and Piotr Puldzian Płucienniczak, the event will be an opportunity to hear different perspectives on the autopoietic and evolutionary properties of networks, the mutual influence of the aesthetics and technologies of digital and analogue media, or the function of remix, reappropriation, and remediation in contemporary art and literature.

The final stage of POR-POL NET will be the publication of an exhibition catalogue accompanied by a collection of critical essays. The book will be available online, conforming to the rules of Open Access, and in a limited number of physical copies. As such, it is intended to serve both as a documentation of the project and an inspiring resource for future research.

Resulta da cooperação estabelecida entre a Academia Artium Humaniorum da Universidade Nicolaus Copernicus em Toruń (PL) e o Centro de Estudos Comparados da Universidade de Lisboa (PT) – duas instituições ativamente empenhadas na promoção da investigação interdisciplinar.

Embora relacionado a toda uma série de iniciativas mais antigas deste tipo (sem excluir a exposição p2p de 2015 com curadoria de Piotr Marecki e Álvaro Seiça ou a conferência https://sztuka.net 2.0 de 2019 organizada na Adam Mickiewicz University em Poznań), POR-POL NET pretende confrontar o seu público com os exemplos mais recentes de obras e ideias, provocando uma reflexão sobre as mudanças geracionais e tecnológicas, a emergência das chamadas culturas digitais vernáculas e a construção de novos conceitos nos campos da teoria literária, do artivismo, e curadoria.

O projeto é lançado com uma exposição internacional, que acontecerá entre 07.06.2023—30.06.2023. Nesta ocasião, obras de cerca de 30 artistas dos dois lados opostos do continente serão apresentadas numa constelação de 10 espaços físicos espalhados pela Polónia e Portugal, bem como numa sala digital Galeria Kliki i Obroty de Piotr Kopik. Sem um centro claramente definido e contando com a colaboração ativa entre as instituições, curadores e criadores, esta parte da iniciativa é em si um exercício prático de estabelecimento de uma rede viva e suscetível. Além disso, com muitos trabalhos e eventos a acompanhar as noções de hibridismo, recombinação, multilinearidade e parasitismo como estratégias criativas válidas, mostram-se diferentes formas de envolvimento com tecnologias e maneiras pelas quais estas simultaneamente aprimoram e transformam as nossas conexões.

A exposição terá um seguimento crítico durante um colóquio internacional de um dia, a decorrer na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, com data prevista para 23.06.2023. Ao combinar uma mesa redonda com artistas e curadores e apresentações de especialistas na área, espera-se que sirva de plataforma para discutir os primeiros resultados do projeto, bem como colocá-los num contexto mais amplo de reflexão académica sobre a natureza das tendências recentes de práticas em rede contemporâneas. Contando com a presença de pensadores como Domenico Quaranta e Ryszard W. Kluszczyński, além de Ana Matilde Sousa, Bruno Ministro e Piotr Puldzian Płucienniczak, o evento será uma oportunidade para ouvir diferentes perspectivas sobre as propriedades autopoiéticas e evolutivas das redes, a influência mútua da estética e das tecnologias dos media digital e analógica, ou a função de remix, reapropriação e remediação na arte e literatura contemporâneas.

A etapa final do POR-POL NET será a publicação de um catálogo expositivo acompanhado de uma coletânea de ensaios críticos. O livro estará disponível online, de acordo com as regras de Acesso Aberto, e em número limitado de exemplares físicos. Como tal, destina-se a servir como uma documentação do projeto e um recurso inspirador para pesquisas futuras.

Wyrasta on ze współpracy między Academia Artium Humaniorum Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu (PL) oraz Centrum Studiów Porównawczych Uniwersytetu Lizbońskiego – dwóch instytucji aktywnie promujących badania interdyscyplinarne.

Choć luźno nawiązujący do wcześniejszych inicjatyw tego typu (między innymi wystawy p2p zorganizowanej w 2015 roku przez Piotra Mareckiego i Alvaro Seiçę czy konferencji https://sztuka.net 2.0, która odbyła się w 2019 roku na Uniwersytecie Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu), POR-POL NET stawia sobie za cel skonfrontowanie odbiorców z najnowszymi przykładami prac i idei, a przez to sprowokowanie szerszej refleksji na temat zmian pokoleniowych i technologicznych, nowych koncepcji w teorii literatury, kuratosrtwie i artywizmie oraz pojawienia się tak zwanych wernakularnych kultur cyfrowych (vernacular digital cultures).

Początkiem projektu jest realizacja międzynarodowej wystawy, która potrwa od 07.06.2023 do 30.06.2023. Przy tej okazji, w szeregu galerii rozproszonych po Polsce i Portugalii oraz w wirtualnej przestrzeni Klików i Obrotów Piotra Kopika, zaprezentowane zostaną prace blisko 30 artystów z obu krajów. Jako inicjatywa pozbawiona jasno określonego centrum oraz w dużej mierze oparta na aktywnej współpracy między instytucjami, kuratorami i twórcami, szczególnie ta część projektu ma charakter ćwiczenia w budowaniu żywych, podatnych na zmianę sieci połączeń. Aspekt ten jest dodatkowo wzmacniany poprzez fakt, że wiele z dzieł jak i wydarzeń towarzyszących korzysta ze zjawisk hybrydyzacji, rekombinacji, multilinearności i pasożytnictwa jako ważnych strategii artystycznych, zwracając uwagę na sposoby, w jakie różne formy korzystania z technologii mogą równocześnie wzmacniać i radykalnie zmieniać nasze relacje.

Krytycznym rozszerzeniem wystawy będzie jednodniowe międzynarodowe kolokwium, zorganizowane na Wydziale Humanistycznym Uniwersytetu Lizbońskiego i zaplanowane na 23.06.2023. Jako połączenie spotkania z artystami i kuratorami oraz trzech paneli prezentacji naukowych, ma ono posłużyć jako okazja do przedyskutowania pierwszych obserwacji na temat samego projektu jak i umiejscowienia go w szerszym kontekście badań dotyczących trendów we współczesnych praktykach sieciowych. Dzięki potwierdzonej obecności takich specjalistów jak Domenico Quaranta i Ryszard W. Kluszczyński, oraz Ana Matilde Sousa, Bruno Ministro i Piotr Puldzian Płucienniczak, których wiedza teoretyczna często wyrasta z eksperymentów natury praktycznej, wydarzenie będzie znakomitą okazją, żeby poznać różne stanowiska na temat autopoietycznych i ewolucyjnych właściwości sieci, wzajemnego oddziaływania na siebie mediów cyfrowych i analogowych, oraz roli remiksu, remediacji i zawłaszczania we współczesnych sztukach plastycznych i literaturze.

Zwieńczeniem projektu będzie publikacja katalogu wystawy opatrzonego tekstami krytycznymi. Tom udostępniony zostanie online, na zasadach Open Access, oraz w organiczonej liczbie kopii fizycznych. Jako taka, książka ma posłużyć jako dokumentacja projektu, jak i inspirujący tekst źródłowy dla dalszych badań.
